Thousands Of Bees Finally Being Removed From Fair Oaks Home

FAIR OAKS, Calif. (CBS13) – Hundreds of thousands of bees that have infested a Fair Oaks home for years and years are finally being removed.

For 20 years, thousands of bees have called a dilapidated house on Brookhill Drive their home. Neighbors said the bee problem has existed at the home for years, with at least four colonies making their home in the structure's front rock wall.

"There was one family across the street and that's why they moved, because of the bees," said neighbor Keith Brinkman.

While some neighbors were driven off by the bees, others have stuck it out and just tried to avoid getting stung. Meg Helton and her family live across the infamous "Bee House".

"One of their chores is to sweep the dead bees from our porch every morning, there's dead bees everywhere," said Helton.

Helton, whose kids have been stung and whose mother is allergic to bees couldn't be happier about the bees finally being removed.

"I tell you we woke up, it was like Christmas morning, seriously, we've been waiting for this day for so long."

Beekeepers began chipping away at the lava rock this morning to remove the numerous hives that hide beneath.

Neighbors thank the family who owns the vacant home for taking action to finally get rid of the nuisance that has literally hovered over the neighborhood for years.

"The neighborhood's gonna have a big block party," exclaimed Helton. "I think we should and everyone should bring something that starts with B or has honey in it."

The entire process is expected to take several days.

The hives will be transported elsewhere and the home re-sided.
