Thousands Line Up For Affordable Housing Program
MODESTO (CBS13) ― Thousands of people are lining up in Modesto today for the opportunity for affordable housing of their choice.
The Housing Choice Voucher Program, which used to be the Section 8 program, just opened in Stanislaus County, and residents waited in long lines for hours just to fill out an application on Tuesday.
John Thurman Field was packed Tuesday morning with people lining up just to get on a waiting list.
The Housing Choice Voucher Program is part of the federal government assistance program for low income families, the elderly and the disabled.
But, getting accepted into this program means the person is free to choose any housing that meets the program's requirements, and they are not limited to subsidized housing projects.
Officials with the Housing Authority say it could take up to six months or longer to review all the applications and prioritize them, then decide who is on the waiting list.
The good news is that it's not a first come first served process. If you missed out today, the applications will be handed out again Wednesday and Thursday at 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at John Thurman Field which is located at 601 Neece Drive in Modesto.
