Thousands Brave Heat For Day Of Fun And Race Action On Folsom Lake
FOLSOM (CBS13) - Ice cold drinks were in high demand as people braved the hottest day of the year so far.
"Is it too hot? No, it's Sacramento," said Cary Greenberg, a Big Wake Weekend volunteer .
Hot weather didn't stop thousands of people from coming out to Folsom Lake for Big Wake Weekend. When the boats weren't racing, people took advantage of the water.
"It felt very cold at first, but the waves came and we jumped over them and it was fun," said Jada Jackson, a spectator.
For volunteers who couldn't escape to jump in the lake, they found other ways to cool off.
"We're pretty much just digging into the ice. We have to dig our hands into the ice to get drinks, and that helps," said Carissa Lightfield a volunteer.
Spectators found ways to bring shade with them -- whether with canopies or hats.
"It's like an umbrella for my beautiful head. And since I have one of these (pointing to bald spot), I got it," said a spectator talking about his wide-brimmed straw hat.
And while temperatures reached close to 100, drivers like Tom Thompson felt the heat even more in the cockpit.
"It's hot standing here," said Thompson. "When you put all this together and you're in there, it's in the high 120s in there."
He'll wear all of this protective gear for about 30 minutes.
"As soon as I get out of the boat and I'm done, I'm completely soaked," said Thompson.
Thompson will take being soaked in sweat over being submerged from a speed boat mishap.
