Thieves Use Garbage Cans To Take Away Haul From Jewelry Store

LINCOLN (CBS13) – Brazen thieves hit a Placer County jewelry store Wednesday night using garbage cans to haul away thousands of dollars worth of  jewels, watches and other items, according to authorities.

The store, Lincoln Jewelers, is located on Highway 65 in Lincoln in the Lincoln Hills Town Center.  Police say the thieves broke into the store about 11:30 pm.

Surveillance video shows two suspects smashing through a side window than entering the store.  The suspects wore gloves and brought a hammer, smashing display cases grabbing what they could.

The two thieves, both wearing grey hooded sweatshirts, used two black garbage cans to carry away their haul of jewels and other items. In the end, they got away with $50,000 worth of jewelry.

The Rhodes family owns the jewelry store.  Debbie Rhodes tells CBS13 the store has been broken into before, but this time was much worse.

"We just couldn't believe what kind of damage, malicious damage, not just taking what they wanted but breaking things and destroying clocks," said Debbie Rhodes. "It's very disheartening...We just have to be grateful that no one was hurt."

The store is in a shopping center with a 24-hour Safeway store and there were people around when the crime took place.

Rhodes says a young employee of a yogurt shop next door was closing up shot when she heard noises coming from the jewelry store and got scared.  She locked herself in a backroom but was able to give police a description of a possible suspect car.  She says it was a dark 4-door sedan.

Lincoln Police are asking the public for any information they may have regarding the theft.
