With David Stern's 5 PM ET Wednesday deadline for the players to accept the latest CBA proposal passed, the two sides continued to negotiate throughout the show without any results to speak of. Grant kept an eye on the situation but the phone lines were packed with callers eager to chime in on the scandal at Penn State. Some also looked ahead to this weekend's NFL slate.
Dan Dierdorf of CBS Sports joined the show quickly in the second hour during his trip to the Pacific Northwest, previewing tomorrow's Chargers/Raiders showdown for AFC West Supremacy. Dan thinks the best is still to come for Carson Palmer and that the Raiders are still getting a feel for each other after their roster moves.
After Grant's Rant on the latest racially-charged metaphor cast upon the NBA labor negotiations (this time by a Union attorney), Charles Davis of NFL Network and College Football on FX started by weighing in on the Penn State situation and whether Joe Paterno should be allowed to keep his job. Charles broke down the implications of the people involved in the situation, reminding us to not focus on Joe Paterno when Jerry Sandusky is clearly a monster. Charles then got into NCAA football, speculating as to whether we'll see a rematch of LSU and Alabama after the sloppy game in Tuscaloosa. He also previewed Oregon/Stanford on Saturday in a game that will pit the Ducks' speed against Stanford's smash-mouth style.
In the final hour, left tackle Joe Staley of the 49ers discussed this weekend's test against the New York Giants and their top-ranked pass rush. Staley talked about how he expects the Giants to attack their offensive line and vice-versa, and whether the 49ers will be able to control the game via the run. He also gave some insight as to how he prepares every week to take on the opponents' top pass rusher and the positive strides the team's young offensive linemen have made since last year. Staley said the 49ers are a hungry team but reminds the listeners that they won't get a trophy for being 7-1.
