SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- A suspected car thief led police on a chase along Interstate 80 in Sacramento this morning before exiting to surface streets and then fleeing on foot, where a neighbor reportedly fired a warning shot at the suspect.
Police have surrounded a neighborhood in north Sacramento near Auburn Boulevard. A perimeter has been set up at Orange Grove and Norris avenues. A SWAT team is also on scene.
According to a CHP traffic alert, the southbound right lane of Auburn Boulevard from Myrtle to the on ramp of I-80/Business 80 is blocked due to police activity. Motorists can expect heavy congestion and delays on Auburn between Madison and Watt.
CBS13's Nick Janes reports that a neighbor fired a warning shot into the ground as the suspect ran through the neighborhood and got into backyards.
The incident began just before 9 a..m. when a car was stolen and police gave chase. Sacramento police, Sacrament sheriff and CHP officers are all involved.
