Tennis Stars Draw Crowds In Citrus Heights
CITRUS HEIGHTS, Calif. (CBS13) – Crowds flocked to Sunrise Mall on Saturday to watch tennis stars take on the Sacramento Capitals, and the packed house led to big business for local vendors.
The Washington D.C. Kastles, featuring Serena Williams, played at the Sacramento Capitals home court in Citrus Heights, a first for the famed tennis phenom.
"I've never played in Sacramento," Serena said. "That's one thing I love about team tennis, you get to come to cities you've never played in."
The success of Saturday's event comes on the heels of another big event Friday night that featured tennis star Martina Hingis.
The Capitals moved back to Citrus Heights after briefly relocating to Roseville, and said they have seen a big change in attendance.
"Our ticket sales are way up compared to last year," said general manager Matt Mcevoy. "Now that we're here, we have more than 2,000 people coming to see the match tonight."
The Capitals' Mark Knowles and Yasmin Schnack defeated Serena Williams and Leander Paes 5-2, but the Capitals were beaten overall by the Kastles 21-16.
