Teen's Drug-Dealing Arrest Likely Not Tied To High-School Football Players' Injuries
EL DORADO COUNTY (CBS13) — Police have arrested an El Dorado County teen after two high-school football players were hospitalized following a game on Friday.
Union Mine High School officials and law enforcement are still trying to figure out what caused the victims to collapse.
El Dorado County Sheriff's investigators say they're looking into whether or not the drug Adderall, a prescription stimulant, had anything to do with the teens collapsing after Friday's game.
Nick Brown collapsed on the field after the game on Friday and was taken by helicopter to a local hospital. His family says the teen had emergency surgery to stop brain bleeding.
"Nick's condition remains unchanged, and still in critical condition. The family continues to welcome thoughts and prayers, and is very grateful for the outpouring love and support," the family said in a statement.
The other player who went down, Justin Schwartz, appears to be in better shape. The district says he suffered a Grade 3 concussion, but it at home recovering.
While it would appear the game caused the injuries, what happened exactly is unclear.
"They were heavily in that game, so that's obviously a concern for us, in the sense of the cause of these injuries. So we are looking at that, as well as other factors that may have contributed," said Superintendent Stephen Wehr.
Meanwhile, sheriff's investigators say they got a tip about Adderall possibly being misused. A 17-year-old at the school was arrested for supplying drugs to minors. They don't believe the two injured teens had taken drugs that were not prescribed to them.
"We're after the truth and we're also after the safety and security of our kids and how do we support that in this whole process," Lt. Tom Murdoch said.
