Teenage Bystanders Help Family Escape From Burning West Sacramento Home
WEST SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Two teens are being credited with helping a family escape from their burning home.
At around 3 p.m., a family of five, which includes two kids, was having a birthday party for one of the kids in a duplex at 1905 Michigan Boulevard in West Sacramento, when a nearby shed caught fire and flames spread to the roof of the home. A couple of boxes of ammunition in the home caught fire and exploded, causing thick, black smoke to fill the structure, say fire officials.
The family was unable to escape from the residence as it filled with smoke and windows shattered.
Two teenagers walking nearby saw smoke and fire coming from the home and rushed inside the home to see if anyone needed help. Once inside, the teens saw the family was stuck and helped them get out.
"They were stuck. Like, they couldn't move. They were crying and, they were moving out of the house," said Cheyenne Dubois, a teen who helped save the family. "The house was eventually going to blow, so I went in there, I opened the door and I grabbed the kids and took them outside."
"Nobody got hurt today...I'm very sorry for the family that lost their house, you know. I can't imagine what they're thinking," said Adam Lamb, a teen who helped rescue the family.
"God's watching," said a tearful woman who was inside the home when it caught fire.
The cause of the fire is under investigation.
The Red Cross is providing the family with temporary shelter.
