Teen Suspect Dies After Officer-Involved Shooting
NORTH HIGHLANDS, Calif. (CBS13) – A juvenile was shot and killed while trying to reach for a dropped firearm during a police pursuit Thursday morning, according to authorities.
The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department said an officer with the Twin Rivers Police Department gave chase after a teen male subject fled when approached in Strizek Park just before 11:00 a.m. Thursday.
The suspect fled on Stephen Drive and was cutting through a residential yard to turn onto Channing Drive when a gun jostled free of the teen's waistband and fell onto the ground, investigators said.
The pursuing officer drew his weapon and ordered the teen to stop, but authorities said the subject ran back for the gun and reached out to grab it.
The officer fired several shots, wounding the teen. Officers performed CPR on the suspect until paramedics arrived, but emergency personnel pronounced the suspect dead at the scene.
The identity of the suspect has not been released pending notification of his family.
Nearby Joyce Elementary School and Futures High School were briefly locked down as a precaution immediately following the shooting.
The officer involved in the shooting has been placed on administrative leave pending a Sheriff's Department investigation, which is standard procedure after any on-duty shooting.
