Teen Survives After Sand Tunnel Collapses At Sonoma Beach
BODEGA BAY, Calif. (CBS13) -- A Sacramento teenager was hospitalized Saturday after a sand tunnel at a Bay Area beach collapsed and nearly killed her.
Photos showed 17-year-old Angelica Marroquin digging a tunnel with her brother at Doran Beach just minutes before it caved in, trapping the teen from head to knees.
"They started digging tunnels, my daughter went in to get more out and the whole thing collapsed on her," said Shannon Jeffries, the victim's mother.
Family members frantically tried to dig the sand off of her, but it took nearly two minutes before the teen was pulled free.
"She was blue, her heartbeat was really, really light," said Jeffries.
A bystander administered CPR and successfully revived Marroquin, and emergency crews rushed her to the hospital. She was released Sunday and is expected to fully recover from the incident.
Marroquin is the second Northern California teen to be seriously hurt in a sand tunnel collapse in the past month. Ryan Buchanan, 17, was buried for more than 10 minutes at a Watsonville state park before he was rescued, and family members say he is still in a vegetative state.
