Teen In Critical Condition After Being Pulled From Water Off San Francisco

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- A 17-year-old girl is hospitalized after getting caught in a rip current in the surf near Muir Beach.

U.S. Coast Guard Lt. William Hanzlik says the teen was pulled from the waters off the Golden Gate Recreation Area around 5:45 p.m. Wednesday by National Park Service crews and a person on the beach.

Once the woman was back on the beach a rescue swimmer was lowered from the Coast Guard helicopter to administer first aid. She was taken to a hospital by a California Highway Patrol helicopter. Hanzlik says she is listed in critical condition. Her name has not been released.

The Coast Guard initially received calls of additional people caught in the surf, but a park service spokeswoman says three other teens were able to make it back to the beach on their own.
