Sword, Baton Used In Liquor Store Robbery
MODESTO (CBS13) — Two suspects, one armed with a sword and the other a baton, robbed a Modesto liquor store Sunday night but didn't' get far before a CHP officer spotted their vehicle, police said.
A clerk at Raja Liquors, located at 1300 Sylvan Avenue in northeast Modesto, called 911 at about 8 p.m. to report that two male suspects entered the store and demanded money.
One suspect was armed with a sword and the other was armed with a baton, the clerk reported. During the robbery, one suspect used the sword to hit the clerk on the hand.
After taking money, the suspects fled in a gold Oldsmobile. A police radio broadcast was made to surrounding local law enforcement agencies, and a CHP officer who was in the immediate area spotted the car on Coffee Road and called for additional assistance.
Modesto Police officers arrived and the suspect vehicle was stopped in the 3100 block of Coffee Road and the two suspects detained. They were identified as David Schafer Ruble, 18, and Cody Ackerson, 21, both of Riverbank. The money and weapons used were recovered. Schafer Ruble was booked for robbery and assault with a deadly weapon. He was the one armed with the sword. Ackerson was booked for robbery.
The store clerk who was assaulted received a minor contusion on his hand from being hit with the sword and was treated at the scene. A second employee was not injured. No customers were in the store at the time of the robbery.
"This was a great example of local law enforcement agencies working together to quickly apprehend two armed suspects," Modesto Police Lt. Jeramy Young said.
