SUV Slams Into South Sacramento Apartment Buildings Causing Gas Leak And Evacuations
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- An SUV slammed into apartment buildings in south Sacramento, causing a gas leak and evacuations early Friday morning.
The Sacramento Fire Department responded to reports of a traffic collision along the 7400 block of Franklin Boulevard shortly after 3:15 a.m. on Friday and found a Ford Explorer had hit two apartment buildings and caused a gas leak.
Captain Simon Wiesner with the Sacramento Fire Department says a man in his 60s was driving the SUV. The man told crews that his foot got stuck on the gas pedal, causing his vehicle to hit 2 four-plex buildings at Phoenix Park Apartments, shearing off a gas line attached to the building.
PG&E responded to the scene and neighbors were forced to evacuate due to the gas leak.
Fire crews reported the heavy odor of gas when they arrived on-scene, but were quickly able to shut off the gas. According to the fire department, one of the buildings may be structurally compromised due to the crash and that the apartment manager would be handling the repairs.
Weisener says drugs are not suspected to be a factor in the accident.
