1 Killed, 2 Hurt In SUV Explosion

RANCHO CORDOVA, Calif. (CBS13) -- Three people were severely burned, one fatally, when their SUV crashed and exploded into a residential home's backyard early Saturday morning.

The older model Chevrolet was driving down Folsom Boulevard in Rancho Cordova near Bradshaw Road when it veered off the road and came to rest on the 9600 block of Rudway Court at about 4:30 a.m., damaging a residential structure.

The SUV exploded and caught fire after it hit the fence, according to authorities.

Two of the occupants were on fire when they escaped the vehicle, according to witnesses, and a quick-thinking homeowner grabbed a garden hose and extinguished the flames on the victims.

A third occupant was unable to escape the vehicle. All of the victims were rushed to the hospital with second- and third-degree burns on most of their bodies, authorities said.

A 20-year-old woman later died at the hospital.

The identities of the victims have not yet been released.

A homeowner who witnessed the incident said she thought the vehicle's gas tank exploded, but didn't know how it happened.

Nearby homes were not damaged by the fire.
