Suspicious Fire Scorches Pioneer Elementary

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) -- An elementary school classroom was damaged Sunday by a fire that authorities are calling suspicious in nature.

The fire started in a trash can next to a classroom at Pioneer Elementary School at about 6:00 p.m., causing moderate amounts of damage before firefighters contained it, according to the Twin Rivers Police Department.

Sacramento Metro Fire crews successfully prevented the flames from spreading to the rest of the school, authorities said.

Investigators are referring to the fire as suspicious but have not identified any suspects in the incident.

Anyone with information on the apparent arson is asked to contact Crime Alert by calling (916) 443-HELP or texting 274637 with "SACTIP" at the beginning of the message. Tipsters can remain anonymous and may be eligible for a reward up to $1,000.
