UPDATE: 1 Dead, 3 Seriously Hurt After Suspect Vehicle Flips On I-5 In Stockton During Police Chase

STOCKTON (CBS13) – One person has died and three others were hurt after a wild police pursuit ended in shots fired and the suspect vehicle flipping off the roadway Tuesday night in Stockton.

The incident started at about 9:45 p.m. when a Stockton police sergeant spotted a vehicle involved in a carjacking at American and First streets hours earlier. The suspects ditched the car and fled in another car, a 2001 Mitsubwith Eclipse, with police in pursuit.

The driver fired at officers and moments later crashed off the on-ramp onto northbound I-5 at Pershing Avenue. The car flipped several times and landed on its hood.

Four people were trapped inside as SWAT officers moved in to secure the scene.

"Basically, we wanted to have our SWAT team come so that it could be done properly and safely because there are citizens that are in this area and we have officers and fire personnel on scene. So, it's going to take as long as we can deem it safe so we can make sure no one else gets hurt," said Officer Joe Silva, spokesperson for the Stockton Police Department.

Two men and two women were in the car. A woman trapped in the wreckage died at the scene. She was identified Wednesday as Gabriela Garza Aparicio, 27, of Stockton.

The driver, Eric Nolan, 30, was arrested for multiple felony charges, including murder, attempted murder of a police officer, carjacking, kidnapping as part of a carjacking, along with multiple narcotic and weapons charges. He suffered minor injuries.

The two other passengers, a 19-year-old man and 22-year-old woman, both of Stockton, were taken to the hospital with serious injuries. Their names were not released.

Police say a gun was found in the car.
