Suspect In Police Custody Dies After Altercation With Stockton Officers

STOCKTON (CBS13) - A suspect in police custody died early Thursday morning in Stockton after an altercation with officers.

Police stopped a car for speeding at about 1:48 a.m. in the area of West Lane and Bianchi and the driver ran from officers. Officers used physical force and baton strikes to subdue the 57-year-old man, who was eventually handcuffed but continued to struggle with officers, police spokesman Officer Pete Smith said.

He was placed in a "safe wrap" in the back seat of a patrol car and taken to the San Joaquin County General Hospital to be checked by medical personnel prior to being booked into the San Joaquin County Jail. When placed in the patrol car he had no complaint of pain or injury, Smith said.

However, when officers arrived at the hospital they found him to be unconscious. Emergency room personnel tried to revive him but he was pronounced dead a short time later.

The suspect has been identified but his name and the names of the officers involved will be released after proper notification, Smith said.
