Suspect Identified In Acampo Shootings

LODI, Calif. (AP) -- San Joaquin County Sheriff's officials say a 40-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of fatally shooting two people and wounding a third at homes around Lodi before leading deputies on a chase.

Howard Smith was arrested on Friday. Sheriff's officials say he went to two homes in the unincorporated community of Acampo around 4:30 p.m. and opened fire, killing two people and injuring a third. The victims' names have not been released, but Smith apparently knew them.

The wounded person's injuries were not considered life-threatening.

Smith was allegedly fleeing in a vehicle when he was spotted by deputies. The sheriff's office says he brandished a firearm before crashing on Highway 99 with the deputies in pursuit.

Sheriff's spokesman Dave Konecny says a possible motive for the shooting has not been confirmed.
