Study Shows Big Economic Boost From New Sacramento Sports Arena

SACRAMENTO (CBS13/AP) - A new study on the impact of a new sports arena in Sacramento shows a big boost economic boost for the area.

The "Think BIG Sacramento" committee led by Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson released the study this afternoon saying the Sacramento-area would gain $7.2 billion over 30 years from a new downtown arena built at the Railyards.

"Think BIG Sacramento" is  a 70-member group formerly known as "Here We Build" broke down the numbers for different parts of the region showing how much each would benefit per year.

According to the impact report, the downtown Sacramento-area would rake in about $100 million per year.  The rest of Sacramento would gain $116 million and regions outside Sacramento would gain a total of $157 million.

The mayor's office says the committee will release a report on Sept. 8 showing the likely revenue sources for a new facility.

The Kings were close to moving the basketball team to Anaheim before deciding last month to stay at least one more season.

NBA Commissioner David Stern has told Sacramento it must have a new arena plan in place by March 1 or the franchise will likely relocate.
