Strike Called Off; Golden Gate Ferry Operating As Usual

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- Golden Gate Ferry service is running as usual after ferry workers apparently called off a planned one-day strike.

Golden Gate Bridge, Highway and Transportation District spokeswoman Mary Currie said early Friday morning that the strike had been called off and ferry service would run.

The district, which manages the ferries, announced a day earlier that they were canceling service on Friday after the Inlandboatmen's Union said it called a strike.

Union officials were objecting to the district's plans to eliminate ticket agents at the terminals and rely only on vending machines and Clipper cards to handle fares.

About 6,000 passengers ride the ferry system each weekday.
