Stranded Dog Now Missing, May Be Injured

STOCKTON, Calif. (CBS13) -- A dog who has been hiding on a bridge for days has gone missing, and neighbors are concerned that the frightened animal may have been injured.

Experienced dog trainer Lisa DuBois has been leaving water for the dog for several days, trying to keep the dog hydrated, but she said the animal went missing Thursday after a neighbor reported that the dog had been clipped by a passing vehicle.

The dog has growled and backed away from all attempts to coax the animal away from its precarious position near a Highway 99 overpass, possibly out of loyalty to an owner that abandoned it there.

Neighbors called animal control out of concerns that the dog could bolt into traffic if cornered, risking a serious accident between surprised drivers, but animal control officers haven't had luck in rescuing the dog.

"It does tug at our heart. We don't want to see any dog get hit by a car or just [wait] out there if it's scared to death," said Officer Rita Coleman.

Authorities are asking residents in the area to call animal control if the dog returns to the area, so officers can make another attempt to rescue the dog.
