Stockton Murder Suspect Gilley's Story Changed Frequently, Detective Testifies
STOCKTON (CBS13) - In the second day of a preliminary hearing in the killing of Dalene Carlson, a detective who interrogated Jason Gilley testified on Tuesday that the accused murderer changed his story several times.
After many different versions, the final story goes like this: Gilley told Stockton police detectives he left Finnegan's bar with Dalene, bought alcohol at the store and took Dalene back to his house and had sex with her on a backyard couch.
He told investigators Dalene was angry because they had sex and she wanted to go home. He told police that while driving, Dalene called him a "piece of garbage" and tried to get out of the moving car, but Gilley locked the doors and dropped her off in Modesto. Gilley told investigators he got back on the freeway and went home to Stockton.
Dalene's older sister believes the 23-year-old victim was trying to break free.
"Basically, it was a ride home and it didn't end up that way. He attacked her," said Narja Goonan, who traveled from Idaho with her mother to be at the hearings. "She jumped out of car to get away from him and he hunted her down in the field."
Gilley is eligible for the death penalty, a decision that prosecutors will make if the case heads to trial.
"I don't want that. I want him to remember every day that he's alive what he did," her sister said.
If the case goes to trial, Dalene's mother and sister plan on traveling from Idaho to watch every step.
Dalene had only been in Stockton a few months before her disappearance. Her body was found in a cornfield in Escalon.
Wednesday is expected to be the last day of the preliminary hearing, at which point the judge will determine if there's enough evidence to go to trial.
