Stockton pins Miracle Mile revitalization hopes on pedestrian, safety improvements
STOCKTON – The City of Stockton is getting one step closer in its plan to revitalize the city's historic Miracle Mile district.
Some call the Miracle Mile the heartbeat of Stockton. There is shopping, dining and entertainment – but as one business owner told CBS News Sacramento, this stretch has been needing a polish and shine.
"It's been the jewel of Stockton for a long time. We have hit a lull and we just need to rise up," said Dave Royce from the House of Shaw Café and Bakery.
Amid talk to jumpstart the neighborhood, the city says they've finally secured a contractor to take on the $20 million revitalization project.
In 2022, the city was granted those funds for pedestrian crossing upgrades, public safety improvements, and revitalization of the Miracle Mile.
Some of the planned improvements to the Miracle Mile – which is located between the University of the Pacific Campus and Harding Way – include landscaping, lighting, security, and enhanced facades for the businesses – all while maintaining the district's historical style.
"I think we're headed in the right direction," Royce said.
Siegfried Engineering has been selected as the contractor for this project and the timeline has them expected to complete the design of the Miracle Mile by fall of 2026.
Improvements here could potentially save lives. Back in 2021, a young restaurant employee died here when he was hit by a car trying to cross the street.
His death put safety in the spotlight on the Miracle Mile, and this project aims to prevent tragedies like that from happening again.
