UPDATE: State Convict Back In Custody After Being Mistakenly Released

LOS ANGELES (CBS13/AP) -- A Los Angeles County jail inmate who was mistakenly released earlier this week was back in custody on Friday.

Wasco State Prison spokesman Henry Cervantez said in a statement that police told prison officials Thursday that 21-year-old Larry Darnell Howard had been wrongly set free Wednesday from a county jail, where he had been held since March 26 so he could attend court proceedings in Los Angeles.

The statement says the Sheriff's Department released Howard despite an active hold in place by the state corrections department.

Howard was taken back into custody by state corrections officials without incident early Friday morning, according to Los Angeles County Sheriff's spokesman Steve Whitmore.

"Earlier indications are it was just a mistake, a clerical error," said Whitmore. "He's back in prison serving his time."

Whitmore said officials are planning an investigation.
