If golf is a good walk spoiled, as Mark Twain once said, then he never witnessed the beauty of Ancil Hoffman Golf Course graced with the likes of some of the best amateur golfers in the world.
The Memorial Amateur delivered once again this weekend with some outstanding amateur golf on a picture perfect day at Ancil Hoffman in Carmichael. John Catlin emerged as the tournament winner with a final round 68 and a five shot victory, but the real winners are the patrons who were treated to a dazzling display of golf.
Today's article in the Sacramento Bee by Steve Pajak floating the idea that Anci Hoffman should host a national golf championship really hit home after I attended the tournament this weekend.
My wife and I walked the course during Monday's final round, and I remember thinking how spectator-friendly Ancil Hoffman proved to be. The gentle rolling berms and rises that pepper the layout provide wonderful views of the fairways and greens.
Pajak mentioned the hard work already put in by tournament founder John Rochelle and county superintendent of golf Greg Bliek. While much work needs to be done, it appears they have laid down a formidable foundation on which to build.
Bringing a high-profile national championship would have countless benefits to the Sacramento area, and the hidden jewel that is Ancil Hoffman could then be shared with the golfing world. That is long overdue.
