Special Ed Teachers In Yuba City Suing School District Over Large Workload
YUBA CITY (CBS13) - Special education teachers are suing a local school district, claiming their workload is simply too large.
The Yuba City Unified School District has been smacked with a lawsuit. Yuba city high teachers known as resource specialists say they are assigned far too many students.
"Yes that's too big of a classroom," said Marlana Panek, a Yuba City resident.
In the lawsuit, teachers state the district is breaking California education code that states "resource specialists shall not simultaneously be assigned to serve as resource specialist and to teach regular classes."
"There needs to be more special ed teachers for the special students," said Panek.
These resource specialists say they are serving more than 28 students, the most they think should be allowed by state law. And many of the students require individualized educational plans.
"If they're over-numbered, that would make it hard. I haven't seen that issue with my daughter," said Mark Triplett, the father of a student.
Triplett's daughter is a special needs student and he's been pleased with her schooling.
"We've had a very good experience, especially with special ed to the mainstream classes my daughter's had," said Triplett.
He was shocked to read about this lawsuit and hopes this doesn't end up hurting the students.
"I hope it doesn't take any money for the schools. They're having a tough enough time keeping money for education," said Triplett.
CBS13 tried to reach out to the plaintiffs today for comment, but did not hear back. The district says they are working toward a resolution.
A hearing in the case is expected to take place on August 12.
