Source: Stephen Curry To Win Second MVP Award
Marc Stein of ESPN is reporting that Stephen Curry of the Golden State Warriors will win his second-consecutive NBA league MVP award, joining a group of 10 other players in NBA history to ever win the award in back-to-back years.
The achievement comes with no surprise, as Curry led the league in points per game (30.1), steals per game (2.1) and free-throw percentage (90.8) all while breaking records such as three-pointers made in a season (402). Plus, he led his team to a 73-win season, a feat no team in NBA history had done before.
While there was great debate surrounding Curry's MVP award last season - James Harden made a strong case - this year's honor has virtually no close competitors. The NBA has never had an unanimous MVP vote before, and Curry has a good shot - LeBron James and Shaquille O'Neal both fell one vote shy in 2013 and 2000 respectively.
The official announcement will be later this week, as the league focused on the Executive of the Year award on Monday. The award was given to San Antonio Spurs GM R.C. Buford after adding players such as LaMarcus Aldridge, David West and Boban Marjanovic in the offseason, leading to a record-tying 40-1 record at home and an impressive 67-15 overall record.
