Some Residents Prevented From Returning Home

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Unlucky may just be the word for David Walker, because he and his family will not be going home again Sunday night.

"Last night we stayed over here at Motel 6," said Walker.

Walker is just one of 50 residents evacuated Friday evening as Sacramento Sheriff's Deputies converged on the Ardenaire Apartments where they caught up to Jimmy Lee Graves, a man suspected of going on a 14-hour crime spree, which included shooting at cops, a burglary, and three carjackings.

"Two doors down from me they shot the guy," said Walker.

Graves was shot dead by deputies after he started a major fire in the apartment which spread to other units, damaging some heavily.

"Very frustrating, especially considering you can't do anything," said Walker.

Leah Osterholt could be considered one of the lucky ones, she will be returned home Sunday after two nights staying with family.

"I didn't really want to stay in a motel. I'd rather stay in my own bed," said Osterholt.

More than 30 returned home Sunday. Those living closest to the apartment, where Graves barricaded himself, will not while crews are working. Management says it could be up to two months before 18 residents can return home.

"We're doing everything we can to find them temporary shelter, for as long as needed," said Rick Sprague of Mercy Housing.

That includes Walker, who with his 5-year-old son, will be put up in an extended stay hotel while hoping that may be his luck will change.
