Solano Warriors Pee Wee Team Heading Off To National Championship, Thanks To Donations
FAIRFIELD (CBS13) — The Solano Warriors pee wee football team left on Friday for a National Championship Tournament in Florida after a CBS13 story helped them raise the money they needed to fly across the country.
The No. 4 ranked team in the nation didn't know if they could go, because they were $20,000 short at the time.
On Friday, the undefeated Warriors loaded their bags and said goodbye to their parents on their way to their dream.
The 11- and 12-year-old boys are heading east for the next eight days. A lot of them haven't left California in their lives.
But it wasn't easy getting to this point. The boys needed to raise more than $20,000. They did car washes and had a GoFundMe page. After their story aired on CBS13, it caught the eye of former San Francisco 49er Patrick Willis who shared the story and donated $250 to the cause.
Their big break came when San Diego Chargers wide receiver Stevie Jackson, who grew up in Fairfield, donated $16,000 to his hometown team.
They players know even if they don't win, their coach has taught them life lessons about staying in school, respecting their parents and being humble and respectful.
