Soccer Player Gets Assist Of A Lifetime During Game

FOLSOM (CBS13) – A local soccer player made the assist of his life during a game last week. But, he didn't help his team score. He helped save the life of a teammate.

Paul Martin Coine was alive and talking Thursday as he prepared to go home from the hospital.

"I guess I was technically dead, right?" questioned Coine.

The answer is yes, at least technically, for several minutes after collapsing during a soccer game in Folsom last Thursday.

"And I kind of ran on the field thinking, 'I don't feel so well.' That's all I remember," said Coine.

Teammate Ken Rogasky saw what happened next.

"And then he turned around and collapsed on the ground," explained Rogasky. "And at that point we started CPR compressions."

It turns out, Rogasky is manager of Mercy Heart and Vascular Institute.

Rogasky performed CPR for 10 minutes before paramedics arrived.

Coine still had no pulse. Rescuers shocked him back to life.

"Things were bleak a week ago," said Rogasky.

Only 8 percent of people survive heart attacks like the one Coine suffered.

Now, Coine is already going home. And he's got plans.

"I'm going to have a Paul's-Not-Dead-Yet Party real soon," said Coine.

Coine now has a defibrillator and will slowly get back to his normal activities. He hopes to get back on the soccer field in a few months.
