UPDATE: Snowboarder Killed In Avalanche At Donner Identified
NORDEN, Calif. (AP) -- A California man has died after being buried in an avalanche while snowboarding at a Sierra ski resort.
The death reported Monday at Donner Ski Ranch was one of several avalanche-related emergencies at ski resorts in the Lake Tahoe area after storms dumped at least 3 feet of fresh snow between Friday and Sunday.
The Nevada County Sheriff's Department identified the man as 49-year-old Steven Mark Anderson of Floriston, an unincorporated community outside Truckee.
The sheriff's department received a call about the missing man at noon Monday, nearly three hours after the avalanche. In a news release, the department said the man's body was found by a search dog under 2 to 3 feet of snow.
The small ski resort is at Donner Summit, about 90 miles northeast of Sacramento.
