Small-Business Owners Worry Black Friday Creep Will Hurt Weekend Sales
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — This holiday shopping season, small businesses will go head-to-head with corporate giants.
While Black Friday dominates shoppers' thoughts, there's always Small-Business Saturday.
Fleet Feet General Manager Dusty Robinson says while the Saturday after Black Friday is always a good one, he's noticed that Black Friday is morphing into Black Thursday. Many big box stores and corporate retailers are opening at 5 or 6 p.m. on Thanksgiving Day.
"Any time those bigger stores can get a jump and get into the consumers' wallets any sooner, that's less money on the table for everybody else," he said.
Denim Spot Boutique owner Peter Hayes has a sale and wine-tasting scheduled for Saturday, but he worries shoppers who have been at it for hours may be tapped out by the weekend.
"A lot of those dollars are already spent before they make it here to our local level," he said.
Lauren Machi from the Midtown Business Association says the day is all about trying to forge connections between the community and businesses.
"It's not about shopping, it's about knowing who the business owner is, knowing where their items come from, it's about that connection, and supporting the community that we living in," she said.
