Slogan On Landmark Modesto Arch Could Soon Be Replaced

MODESTO (CBS13) -- The Modesto Arch stands tall in the heart of downtown, but the slogan on it may soon change.

Water, wealth, contentment, and health. Those four words have been around for decades and now city leaders will decide whether to replace the current slogan and logo with this one: "Modesto: Family Owned and Operated".

"I hope they wouldn't change it," said a Modesto resident.

But some downtown business owners like the way it sounds, and the message behind the colorful display.

Cupcakes Bakery and Company owner Teri Jordan hopes the new slogan will help bring shops to downtown. But employee and long-time Modesto resident Vicki Wright doesn't like the idea of changing a piece of history.

"I love it. I love the concept. It is small business that are owned and operated in downtown Modesto. Most of us are. And it's great we're being recognized," said business owner Teri Jordan.

"Family owned and operated sounds so car dealership and I really like water, wealth contentment and health," said Wright.

PMZ realtor Sarah Fields is part of the committee that spent years coming up with the catch phrase. She says the slogan comes with a marketing plan. The goal is to attract people to a place that often ends up on the worst fill-in-the-blank list.

"It's not so much about the slogan the brand its more about giving people a chance to stand behind one cohesive message and combat the negativity that has plagued modest in the past," said Fields.

How much will it cost the city to rebrand itself? No one has even crunched the numbers yet, but the city says, if approved, the logo on everything from city cars and letter head would be swapped out in phases.

The Modesto city council ended up pulling the rebranding campaign from tonight's agenda. City leaders aren't saying if it will be back up for discussion.
