Slick Roads Contribute To Hectic Day On Freeways

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) — From solo spinouts to multiple-car crashes, it was a rough commute on slick Sacramento roads Thursday morning after the first rain in three weeks.

An SUV ended up sideways, blocking part of a Highway 50 onramp in downtown Sacramento.

"I was just like … lost control," the driver said.

Steady overnight and early-morning rain made freeways slippery.

Dozens of crashes were reported around Sacramento. The cause was no great surprise -- people driving too fast for conditions.

"It's a little slicker," CHP Officer Rick Murray said.

There was the rollover in Citrus Heights overnight at I-80 and Greenback. The driver walked away from this one after taking the curve too fast.

In south Sacramento a woman smashed her van into a telephone and power pole, knocking out service for a handful of customers near 44th and Fruitridge. The driver and her passenger had major injuries. It was unclear, though, if rain was a factor.

Later, a four-car crash tied up traffic on northbound I-5 at Sutterville. Initial reports said one of the cars ended up on top of another.
It all made for a busy day on the roadways for emergency personnel, but the storm was a brief one. Conditions are expected to be dry through the weekend.
