Sierra highway chain controls dropped after snowstorm
TRUCKEE – Interstate 80 in the Sierra was closed in both directions on Friday afternoon after multiple spinouts were reported and whiteout conditions were seen at Castle Peak.
Caltrans said I-80 was closed from the Nevada state line to Colfax around 3:30 p.m. About 30 minutes later, traffic could be seen moving again with chain controls from the state line to Baxter.
Highway 50 traffic was being held at Meyers and Echo Summit but was released around 3:15 p.m. Chain controls were in effect from Kyburz to Meyers.
Chain controls were lifted sometime around noon Sunday on I-80 and Highway 50.

Heavy snow is expected to continue in the mountains through the evening hours with some places with minimal visibility. A winter weather advisory is in effect until 10 p.m.
