Shuttle Endeavour To Fly Over Sacramento On Way To SoCal Museum
SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - Sacramento-area residents will have a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to see the space shuttle Endeavour flying in the skies over the Capital City as it flies to Southern California where it will permanently be displayed in a museum. However, it may be a little later than expected due to some bad weather back East.
Endeavour was originally scheduled to leave Florida for Houston on Monday. Due to storm conditions, the departure is now scheduled for Tuesday.
Endeavour will ride piggyback on a Boeing 747 and make stops at Edwards Air Force base with flyovers in San Francisco and Sacramento.
NASA will not release the exact time of the flyovers for security reasons, and also warned that weather needed to cooperate in order for the shuttle to stick to the flight plan.
Endeavour is the second of NASA's three retired shuttles to head to a museum. It is headed to the California Science Center in Southern California. Discovery landed at the Smithsonian Institution's display hanger in Virginia last spring.
The Endeavour was built to replace the Challenger, which exploded just after take off in 1986. Endeavour flew 25 missions for a total 299 days in space.
Hundreds of trees have been cut or trimmed back along the path that Endeavour will make from LAX to the California Science Center in Exposition Park.
A public ceremony is scheduled for Oct. 13 to welcome the shuttle to the Science Center.
