Shingle Springs Fire Knocks Out Power To More than 40,000 Residents
6 p.m update: Eastbound 50 before Shingle Springs remains closed, but some of the westbound lanes have reopened. Firefighters say the fire is out and they are mopping up hot spots.
Nearly 50,000 residents are still without power after PG&E cut electricity to the region because the fire burned close to a substation.
SHINGLE SPRINGS (CBS13) — A fire burning on the south side of Highway 50 in Shingle Springs has PG&E cutting power to more than 40,000 residents.
The fire has burned about five acres near Durock Road and is threatening businesses.
Temperatures at the time of the fire were in the mid-100s.
A spokesperson for PG&E said it turned off the power as a safety precaution for firefighters and that power will be turned back on after the fire is out.
