Sheriff's Office: Children Pulled From 'Deplorable Conditions' In Solano County Home
By Kelly Ryan
SOLANO COUNTY (CBS13) — Three people are facing child abuse charges after the Solano County Sheriff's detectives found four children living in deplorable conditions.
A frantic call from one of the children inside the home to another family member brought deputies to the home.
After receiving that call last Wednesday from one of the juveniles inside the home, Tiffany Sanchez says she made an excuse to pick up her half-sister. She Immediately took her to the Solano County Sheriff's Office to file a report of abuse.
"Based on that, deputies performed a welfare check of residence. Our investigators interviewed a child and served a search warrant in the 6000 block of California Pacific road and Elmira," said Christine Castillo with the sheriff's department.
They describe the inside of the home as filthy.
"Deputies found the home to be in deplorable condition. It was not in habitable for anyone -- let alone children," she said.
Elbert McPike, 36, and Stepheney Shannon, 34, were arrested on multiple counts of child endangerment. A 14-year-old boy was arrested on sexual abuse charges.
The four juveniles who were taken from the home were placed in protective custody. Detectives say at least one was the victim of physical and sexual abuse.
Sanchez says she's relieved the kids are finally out of the dirty and unsafe conditions.
"They are safer where they're at and they're happy. They're thriving and they're telling me they feel safe for the first time in their lives," she said.
