Sheriff's Department Makes Arrest In South Sacramento Cold Case

SACRAMENTO (CBS13) - The Sacramento County Sheriff's Department arrested a man in Nevada on Wednesday who is suspected of killing a teenage girl 16 years ago.

Sheriff's homicide detectives identified Terry Glen Short, 41, as the suspect in the murder of Jessica Sanchez, 13, in 1996 through DNA evidence. They served an arrest warrant on Short in Nevada, where he is in custody on unrelated charges.

Short is expected to be extradited to Sacramento County, where he will be formally charged with one count of homicide, Deputy Jason Ramos said.

Sanchez's body was found in Florin Creek Park along Persimmon Avenue in south Sacramento in February 1996. Evidence indicated that the victim had been sexually assaulted and shot in the upper body. As time went by, leads in the case were exhausted and the investigation grew cold, Ramos said.

However, near the end of last year, homicide detectives received information that DNA evidence linked the suspect, Short, to the murder. Detectives conducted further investigation and ultimately secured the arrest warrant for Short on Wednesday.
