Sheep Mysteriously Mauled In Sacramento County
WILTON (CBS13) - Two sheep belonging to a Sacramento county sheep owner were mauled overnight. He thinks this is cause for alarm.
A fish and game warden wrapped up his investigation Monday. He thinks the sheep were attacked by coyotes, but this may not be the end of the story.
The attack is so brutal we can hardly show you what's left of a sheep.
"There's absolutely no meat left in this animal at all," said sheep owner Dan Foster. "It's just been completely devoured."
It's the rude awakening Dan Foster was greeted with Monday morning when two of his five pet sheep were mauled, their necks broken by what only could have been done my a large animal.
"It was an animal big enough to be able to just snap their neck by grabbing the neck and shaking the head and snapping their neck," said Foster.
Foster thinks that animal could have been a mountain lion.
"And if it's a mountain lion we're really worried this could turn into a human attack," he said.
Foster believes the big cat could be accessing his property through a creek that runs along his property all the way to the Cosumnes River Preserve.
And what's even more alarming, the day before Christmas, Foster says he found eight of his sheep dead. When Foster contacted the ag commissioner's office he says they told him no one would come out to investigate because the dead sheep had been moved. This time, Dan left the carcasses alone.
"We really need them to come out here and take a look at this," said Foster.
But fellow sheep owner and friend, Dan Garcia, came out and took a look. He thinks the culprit is the work of a dog, not a cat.
"Most likely coyotes," said Garcia. "Predators, some of them do the same thing."
The warden says there's no way to know what happened in the previous attack.
The ag commission representative will be at the farm Tuesday to investigate.
