SF Supervisors Give Initial OK To Treasure Island Development
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- San Francisco has approved a gigantic redevelopment project for Treasure Island that includes 8,000 homes and high-rises as tall as 450 feet.
The Board of Supervisors voted 11-0 Tuesday to approve the project under a plan that's been nearly 15 years in the making.
The project would take 20 years to remake the old Navy base in San Francisco Bay. Groundbreaking could be held next year.
The $1.5-billion project calls for transforming the manmade island into a new neighborhood with parks, shops a school and a ferry terminal.
The board rejected arguments by the Sierra Club and other groups that the project would harm the environment and increase traffic problems.
