SF Police Arrest 2 In Shooting Of Girl

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- San Francisco police arrested two men Saturday in connection with the shooting of an 11-year-old girl in the city's Western Addition neighborhood, police said.

The suspects -- a 19-year-old and an 18-year-old -- have not been identified. Police spokesman Albie Esparza said they were among a group of young men involved in a verbal altercation around 11:15 p.m. Friday. One of the men in the group pulled a weapon and opened fire, Esparza said.

The girl was shot in the chest by an apparent stray bullet that went through an apartment building.

She was taken to San Francisco General Hospital and was in critical but stable condition on Saturday, according to police and a family member.

Her uncle, Eric Holt, said the bullet went through his niece's body.

The girl, identified by Holt only as Linda, was spending the night with her aunt and uncle. She had come down asking for a snack and returned to her bedroom when several shots rang out, he said.

One bullet went through a living room window; another went through the bedroom where the girl was.

"She came running out and said, `I've been shot,"' Holt said.

He sat her down in the hallway where there were no windows and told her to calm down.

Holt said the girl never cried, but asked him if she was going to die. She was bleeding from the back and required surgery at the hospital, he said.
