Several Ski Resorts Open For Holiday Weekend

SOUTH LAKE TAHOE, Calif. (CBS13) – Several Sierra resorts are planning to cash in on the rare opportunity to draw people to the ski slopes on the Fourth of July weekend.

Late-season storms brought a fresh layer of snow to the Sierra mountains in late May and early June, and despite recent heatwaves that have raised temperatures to 100 degrees in the Sacramento Valley, a thick snowpack is still coating the upper elevations.

Heavenly Valley plans to offer family snow tubing on one of its hills for $30, and several other resorts, including Kirkwood, Squaw Valley, Alpine and Sugar Bowl will each have at least one lift open for skiers from Saturday until Monday.

Campers and hikers have been less thrilled about the weather, which has led to excess runoff that has closed some campsites due to flooding concerns. Campers in Yosemite have been warned that trails and campgrounds may be muddy or still snowbound in some areas.
