Senior Moments: "I said gophers not golfers!"
By Frank Luna
What kind of golf blog would this be if there wasn't a small tribute to the iconic movie Caddyshack?
Not that Del Paso Country Club in any way resembles the fictional Bushwood Country Club in the beloved comedy.
Del Paso has a rich history dating back to early 1900's and a few driven golf enthusiasts that were just looking for a place to play, far away from the encroaching city of Sacramento.
Through the benevolence of Orlando Roberston, owner of the last 149 acres of Rancho Del Paso, created from a Mexican land grant, the local group acquired the site for their golf course.
It was 6 miles from downtown over rough road, a trip long enough that many spent the night on the second floor of the original club house.
Del Paso enjoys a rich history, hosting some of the games biggest names like Tommy Armour, Gene Sarazen, Walter Hagen, Byron Nelson and many more.
The club itself hosted the Swing at Cancer charity event and almost half the membership will serve as volunteers for the Open.
After a complete make over a few years ago, and a decade long pursuit for the USGA's second most important championship, (after the US Open), Del Paso is poised to host the 36th US Senior Open.
Whether you judge golfers by height or land your drive in the lumberyard, a trip to the Open in these pristine historic surroundings is sure to please.
