Second Man Convicted In Modesto Mini-Mart Slaying
MODESTO, Calif. (AP) — A second man has been convicted in the fatal shooting of a man outside a Riverbank convenience store three years ago.
The Modesto Bee reports a jury on Tuesday found Daniel Pantoja guilty of first-degree murder and attempted carjacking in the shooting death of 21-year-old Chaz Bettencourt. Pantoja faces up to 25 years to life in prison when he's scheduled to be sentenced Nov. 8.
On Monday, jurors convicted Turlock Diaz on similar charges, while Jah-Kari Phyall was acquitted of all charges.
Authorities say Bettencourt had gone to a store with a friend in August 2010. Bettencourt was shot when his friend went inside to call 911 after three people demanded a car.
