School Locked Down After Shooting In North Highlands
NORTH HIGHLANDS (CBS13) - A North Highlands elementary school was put on lockdown for several hours after a man was shot only a block away on Monday afternoon and deputies searched for the suspect.
The victim was reportedly shot in the leg while sitting inside his vehicle. He was transported by ambulance to Mercy San Juan Medical Center and was expected to survive. The man was shot outside a gas station at Madison Avenue and Jackson Street.
That's right down the street from Madison Elementary School, where about 60 kids and six children were on campus for an after-school program. The school is in the Twin Rivers district. Officials from Twin Rivers couldn't immediately be reached for comment.
The shooting occurred at about 4:40 p.m. Students were eventually released to their parents, some of whom were upset they weren't notified of the lockdown until they arrived on campus.
As of 6 p.m. the intersection of Jackson and Madison was still blocked off as investigators processed the scene at the gas station.
