San Francisco Zoo To Get First New Tiger Since Fatal Attack
SAN FRANCISCO (AP) -- The San Francisco Zoo will be getting a new Siberian tiger for the first time since a fatal Christmas Day 2007 tiger attack that forced the zoo to upgrade its enclosure.
Zoo spokeswoman Lora LaMarca says the new cat, a 10-year-old, 295-pound Siberian named Martha, is scheduled to arrive in June from the Henry Doorly Zoo in Omaha, Neb.
LaMarca says the zoo had no plans to obtain another Siberian, but that the Doorly approached them after deciding to downsize its tiger collection.
The San Francisco Zoo currently has no Siberians. Its last one, an 18-year-old named Tony, was euthanized last year.
The tiger responsible for the attack, Tatiana, was killed by police after jumping out of its enclosure and fatally mauling 17-year-old Carlos Sousa Jr. and injuring two others.
