San Francisco 49ers Field Woes Mean Moving Jesuit-De LaSalle High School Football Game
CARMICHAEL (CBS13) — The Jesuit High School football team was preparing for a nationally televised matchup, but the game won't happen at the San Francisco 49ers' new stadium.
The game between Jesuit and De La Salle High won't be played at Levi's Stadium after sod issues were found at the field.
Practice went on without a fumble, even if the news was a bit devastating for the players.
"I guess it's a little shocking, a professional team, you kind of expect it to be a little more orderly considering it's a week away," said Robert Paylor.
The 49ers will play the San Diego Chargers in a preseason game on Sunday on newly laid turf. But Chris Fahey, Jesuit's athletic director, says more repairs will be done on the field on Monday.
But the 49ers are trying to make it up to Jesuit by offering the team a chance to play a game on the field in October against Elk Grove.
"They could have easily said we're not doing this at all they really went out of their way to have a chance to play there," he said.
Whether or not ESPN televises the game is up in the air. A new location hasn't been set yet. There are possible plans to move the game to a college stadium, but if the lighting and equipment isn't good enough, ESPN will likely be unable to cover the game.
But the team says at the end of the day, they have a game to play, and they have prepared for the season opener.
"It doesn't take away from the fact that we have a football game," said Isaiah Bailey.
