Saint Mary's Gets 7th Seed In NCAA Tournament

MORAGA, Calif. (AP) — Saint Mary's will open the NCAA tournament as a seventh seed against No. 10 Purdue on Friday in the Midwest Region in Omaha, Neb.

With an automatic bid in hand after beating Gonzaga to win the West Coast Conference tournament, the Gaels (27-5) could relax a bit on Selection Sunday a year after being one of the last teams left out of the field. They still had to wait to learn their fate as they were the 63rd team announced for the 68-team field.

The Gaels received their best seeding ever, topping the No. 8 the team got in 1989 before losing to Clemson in the first round.

This marks the fourth trip to the NCAA tournament under coach Randy Bennett in the past eight years.
